Welcome to www.janevk.com

I am Jane van Keulen. TEXTILE ARTIST

My business is based in Christchurch New Zealand. My work is predominantly in the area of Hand Embroidery. I do cross over into a number of other areas in the textile art arena to complement whatever I am working on. I have a CERTIFICATE in DESIGN FOR EMBROIDERY this is through The Association of New Zealand Embroiderer’s Guilds. I am available to tutor on a contract basis. Travelling to do this is no problem. I can offer a large range of workshops from Traditional to Contemporary work. This is an ever evolving area of my business. I have set up a Gallery as part of my website. All work past & present is available for you to view . All work is original & can be put together into workshop structure. If you would like an adaptation of something you see or a piece that is unique to your workshop please be in touch. I am happy to undertake commissions & to negotiate the sale of my work.

I offer a range of classes through the Community Education Programme & at Stitches in Christchurch. Some of these are done over a few weeks & others are 1 day classes. My Contact page has details of these on a Term by Term basis. As these are organised I will update the information. Feel free to contact me to request classes for next term or comment on those you have attended.

I hand dye a large & varied range of Hand Embroidery Threads.

  • Hand Dyed
  • Hand Painted
  • Space Dyed
  • Random Dyed
  • Variegated

All these names are used to describe my threads . I’m sure the purist's amongst you would have a separate & detailed explanation for each label but a rose by any other name is still a rose.

I have a workspace at home where I dye these threads. Most are bought in bulk from overseas. I then wind them into the individual skein lengths. This varies according to the type of thread. I then hand dye the Threads in batches of six skeins. All of these batches are one offs. I have not created a range that is repeatable. The shop has been set up so that you can select your own personal colour schemes for that special project or for your stash & buy direct from me using your credit card through a secure facility.

I paint the colour on to each individual skein with a paintbrush. All dyers have their own distinct style - I chose to use either 2 or 3 colours in each skein & to have a very short repeat of each colour so that when you are using them the colour change is frequent & new colours are created in the mixing of those painted on. The threads are then heated to fix the colour. Lots of rinsing. I always take the temperature from cold through to very hot & then back to cold. In the last rinse I add a specially designed detergent to ensure that all possible excess dye is removed. The skeins are then dried. Often seen floating in the breeze hooked on the wrought iron gate at home. I then re skein them into their finished twisted form. The tags are hand written with the thread type, length of skein & for a bit of fun I add a name to each batch.

If you require a specific colour scheme I am happy to custom dye to your requirements. Please contact me. I recommend that you purchase what you need to complete your project.

I also dye a small selection of Counted Fabrics. These are available through my shop.

If you are a retailer & are interested in wholesale purchases of my threads please make contact to discuss this. I have a wholesale rate & am currently supplying a select group of Retailers.

I am passionate about the work that I do. I look forward to working with in whatever way I can.

Thankyou for visiting & pass it on.
